What is the Billings Ovulation Method®?

The Billings Ovulation Method® is a simple, yet scientific, natural method of fertility management that teaches you to recognize the body’s natural signs of fertility..

Pure and Simple Fertility Awareness

Backed by more than 50 years of scientific research, the Billings Ovulation Method® offers a highly effective, natural way to achieve or postpone pregnancy and monitor reproductive health—without drugs or devices.

The method works for women in all reproductive situations, including those who are coming off hormonal contraception, breastfeeding, weaning, or approaching menopause. No matter where you are in your reproductive journey, the four simple rules of the Billings Ovulation Method® remain the same.

The effectiveness of the Billings Method™ has been demonstrated in leading medical journals such as The Lancet, Contraception, Fertility and Sterility, The British Medical Journal, and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as in studies conducted by the World Health Organization.

Understanding Your Body’s Natural Signals

Your reproductive system is wonderfully complex, yet the signals it gives you are surprisingly simple. Throughout your cycle, you may notice changes in vaginal discharge and the sensation at the vulva. These changes occur because your cervix produces different types of mucus in response to hormone shifts.

Once you learn to recognize these patterns, you can clearly identify the fertile and infertile phases of your cycle.

Cervical mucus is the most reliable sign of fertility—a conclusion supported by more than 50 years of scientific research.

Why the Billings Ovulation Method® Stands Out

✔ Identifies Both Fertile and Infertile Days

A unique advantage of this method is the ability to recognize when you are infertile as confidently as when you are fertile. This empowers you to know—on any given day—whether intercourse is likely to result in pregnancy, depending on your intentions.

WHO trials show that over 90% of women identify their fertile phase and Peak day within the first month of observation and charting.

✔ Highly Effective for Achieving Pregnancy

When you’re ready to conceive, the method helps you pinpoint your most fertile time and your Peak day, optimizing your chances of success.

✔ Supports Reproductive Health

By learning what is normal for you—your cycle patterns and mucus characteristics—you can more easily notice irregularities such as unusual bleeding or changes in discharge. This awareness can prompt timely medical evaluation when needed.

Effectiveness in Preventing Pregnancy

What distinguishes the Billings Ovulation Method® from both natural and artificial methods is its simplicity grounded in solid research. More than 850,000 hormonal assays confirm the reliability of its four simple rules.

It has been independently evaluated by the World Health Organization and other respected institutions and shown to be highly effective in avoiding pregnancy.

One of the largest trials, a 12-month multi-centre study in China, reported:

  • 0% method-related pregnancy rate (when instructions were followed correctly)

  • 0.5% use-related pregnancy rate (including user error)

These results demonstrate effectiveness comparable to the Pill and higher than condoms and diaphragms. With ongoing improvements in teaching, perfect-use pregnancy rates have fallen to nearly zero. Continuation and satisfaction rates remain consistently high.

Success in Achieving Pregnancy

A retrospective study of couples seeking to conceive through Billings Ovulation Method® instruction (1999–2003) showed:

  • 63% (240 of 384) achieved pregnancy

  • 60% of these couples had previously been childless

  • Only 18% had prior knowledge of fertility signs

  • Average time trying to conceive before instruction: 15 months

  • Average time to conception after instruction: 4.7 months

Among 207 sub-fertile couples (trying for more than 12 months), many achieved pregnancy. Of 20 couples who had previously not conceived through IVF/ART, 7 conceived using the Billings Ovulation Method®.

Even among women over age 38, about half achieved pregnancy.

The China multi-center trial again confirmed exceptionally high effectiveness, with a 0% method-related and 0.5% use-related pregnancy rate—demonstrating that the method is reliable, evidence-based, and highly effective for both postponing and achieving pregnancy.
